Last February, beautiful Madeira Island was battered by high winds and rainstorms of unusual violence. Tragically, the disaster claimed many lives, destroyed or seriously damaged bridges and homes, disrupted business and forced hundreds of people to seek accomodation in military facilities or in hotels.

The worst affected areas were the capital city Funchal and the municipalities of Ribeira Brava, Câmara de Lobos and Santa Cruz.

Local authorities and the Portuguese government rapidly joined forces to aid the victims and to implement a massive clean up operation.

Brave Madeirans are now determined to restore normality, repairing their homes and communities.
